Lets setup an e-mail account in Thunderbird.
First make sure you have the following details available.
- e-mail adress:
- username:
- incoming server:
- outgoing server:
When we have all these available we need to start Thunderbird.
if you do not have Thunderbird installed already you can download it in your own language here first.
When starting Thunderbird for the first time it will ask you if you want to import settings and mail folders from a previous account on your computer.
In this case there is nothing to import so that makes it simple, if there is something to import it will show you the available options and importing something form another e-mail installation will not delete anything so go ahead if you want to.
Thunderbird can handle various kinds of account but we will stick with an e-mail account in this example.
In the next step Thunderbird will ask you for,
- Your name: (this is just a friendly name you want people to see when they receive mail from you)
- E-mail address: (this needs to be your e-mail address that people can send mail to)
In this case we choose IMAP, this means that all e-mails will stay on the server so you can access the same mail from multiple locations.
You can also choose POP and in that case the e-mails will always be downloaded to that specific computer, also note that if you download the e-mails in Thunderbird there is a 2GB limit per folder, if you choose IMAP there is no space limitation.
We also need to fill in the incoming and outgoing mail server.
Next step is to fill in the incoming user name, we received this together with the e-mail address and the incoming and outgoing server name.
Almost there, the account name can be anything you like as it will show in Thunderbird.
We only use a secure connection to our server so we need to setup some more things before we can see our mails.
First we select the “edit” tab and go to account setings.
In the windows version you can find the account settings under “tools”
When the account settings have opened we select “server settings” on the left.
Here we can choose if and what kind of secure connection we want to use, we select “SSL”
Then still in the account settings we select “outgoing server” on the left bottom side.
Here we select “edit” on the right.
Also here we select “SSL”
Click on OK on the right bottom and Thunderbird is go!
